About Us
Built by rescuers, for rescuers. Our mission is to provide realistic, standards-based training that keeps you safe and effective in the field.
Our Mission
"To empower rescue professionals with the skills, knowledge, and confidence to operate safely and effectively in high-risk environments."
We believe that technical rescue is a perishable skill. It requires constant practice, critical thinking, and a deep understanding of the "why" behind the "how." We don't just teach you to pass a test; we teach you to solve problems when lives are on the line.
Our Team

Josh Hicken
I founded Wasatch Technical Rescue with a simple goal: to raise the standard of technical rescue training in our region. With over 25 years of climbing and mountaineering experience and 18 years in emergency services, I've seen firsthand what works and what doesn't in the real world.
I am passionate about bridging the gap between classroom theory and the chaotic reality of a rescue scene. Most of all, I'm all about having a good time while doing what I love.

Paris Hicken
Paris is the heart behind the scenes at Wasatch Technical Rescue. While she may not have a traditional rescue background (other than being married to Josh), she's become an indispensable part of everything we do.
She handles all the things that keep our training running smoothly: logistics, scheduling, student communications, and making sure everyone stays warm, fed, and taken care of. When she's not keeping things running, you'll find her being a devoted dog mom to Sparky.

Taylor "Jonesy" Jones
Taylor brings 14 years of wildland firefighting and rescue experience. Currently serving as battalion chief overseeing rescue operations for Utah County Fire, he specializes in swiftwater, rope, ice rescue, and SCUBA operations.

Kaden Osborn
Kaden has spent the past 5 years as a Firefighter/AEMT, developing a profound passion for technical rescue. He actively seeks opportunities to enhance his skills and finds satisfaction in teaching rescue techniques. Outside of firefighting, Kaden engages in rock climbing, skiing, mountain biking, and holds a helicopter pilot license.

Training Philosophy
Principles First
We teach principles over rote memorization. If you understand the physics and the system, you can adapt to any scenario.
Realistic Scenarios
Training should be harder than the real thing. We use realistic mannequins, complex terrain, and stress inoculation to prepare you for the worst day.
Safety Culture
Safety isn't a checklist; it's a mindset. We integrate risk assessment and safety management into every evolution.
Continuous Improvement
The industry is always evolving, and so are we. We stay up-to-date with the latest research, equipment, and standards.
